3. Randolph J. Nelson is displeased about his mission
The third reason why its inhabitants consider the city of Esperanza to be one of a kind is that Esperanza is, in fact, the only city on Earth.

In the years before the Extinction, the greatest source of wealth of the American Empire was its pharmaceutical technology. Every year, a new infection was developed and released in foreign countries, which would then be forced to buy their vaccines. This blackmail went on for decades, gravely damaging the population of the Afroeurasian Union, whose leaders accepted the deal under large bribes.

Although the exact details are unknown, it is said that some researchers of an European University developed a countermeasure against this procedure: a nanorobotic device designed to rapidly destroy human tissue and multiply all over a specific area. The rebels warned the Americans to cease their activities or the device would be released on their country.

The Empire immediately released their most contagious viral infection over Europe, obliterating the rebellion.

The rebels, however, had already sent an infiltrator to the Empire who, when not receiving any feedback from his partners, proceeded with the plan and released the nanobot, thus starting the event later known as the Extinction.

The entire human population of the continent of America disappeared in less than two hours. Because of that, the vaccine for the infection released in Europe could not be retrieved. The virus spread all over the Union and nearby territories, ending all human life outside properly shielded areas.

The city of Esperanza was properly shielded.

This is Randolph J. Nelson.

He is a Saint George dragon. His favorite color is electric blue, his favorite type of music is electroswing and, personality wise, his acts are guided by a strong sense of righteousness and an almost obsessive zeal to accomplish his objectives.

Unfortunately, these two traits became incompatible when he infiltrated Esperanza as a spy and found out that it was a much fairer place than his former fatherland.

He currently has no idea where he is or why.

nel0< About bloody time.

kro< Good morning, agent Nelson. You will reach your destination in a few minutes, so I will now brief you about your current objective.

We have received a distress call via radio from a small survivor settlement inside the orphanage of Polis Delta. There are five children and one adult, they have been surviving in complete isolation since the Extinction and their supplies are running low.

You will contact them and bring them all back to Esperanza, so they can receive proper medical attention and rejoin society.

Any questions?

1

nel0< Yes, several. Why me? This is a simple retrieval mission. Any rookie agent could do it. I have received elite training.

kro< Yes, at the British Intelligence Service. Which you betrayed to join us.

So understand that we are not exactly confident of your faithfulness right now. Changes of heart are not necessarily a one-time thing.

You will be doing the dirty work for the Civil Protection service until we decide that we feel comfortable leaving the good citizens of Esperanza at your care.

nel0< And why didn't you give me the briefing back at the city?

kro< Because you are to blindly obey our every order to prove your unconditional loyalty. Anything else?

nel0< Just one more question. Why wasn't I allowed to bring any weapons?

kro< Because it's a simple retrieval mission that any rookie agent could do. You don't need a weapon, you have received elite training.

[Transmission over]

nel0< Shit...
