4. Dr Javalier Rawhead fixes Vero
1

Meanwhile, back at the city and in a different timeline.

ver0< Ack... Uuurgh...

1

ver0< Fuck. Where I am? What did I take last night?

And why do I feel as if all of my organs had been removed and replaced with synthetic prostheses?

1

1

ver0< My arms! Fuck! My legs! What is this?! What happened?!

Who did this to me?!

jav0< Ah, you finally woke up.

1

This is Javalier Rawhead, phD in Robotics. He did this to her.

Dr Rawhead is a genet, which is a viverrid and totally not a feline. His favorite color is teal, his favorite movie genre is sociopolitical science-fiction and his need for rationally explaining all facts and processes in life verges on obsessive.

His desire for self-improvement has lead him to use bionic technology to modify the parts of his own body which he deemed defective or inefficient, but despite his eccentricities, his research in robotic implants and automatization have vastly contributed to the greatness of Esperanza. He is not moved by desires of fame and wealth, but by mere scientific curiosity and the wish to be useful to his fellow citizens, who recognize his generosity with respect and gratefulness.

jav0< G...

ver0< If you try to rape me I'll kill your fucking face.

1

jav0< Madam, please, I know that you must feel very confused and vulnerable right now, but I promise that I mean you no harm.

If you calm down, I will answer all of your questions.

ver0< Fine. Who are you, where am I and what's wrong with my limbs? Can you answer those?

1

jav0< I can try. I am Javalier Rawhead, PhD in Robotics, expert in autonomous mobile devices, nanorobotics and bionic prosthetics. I am a genet, which is a viverrid and totally not a feline.

You are in an operation room in the extensive surgery section of Esperanza's Wall Hospital, where almost all of your organs were removed and replaced with synthetic prostheses.

Unfortunately, during your journey through the desert you were exposed to the American virus, which gradually necrotized your limbs and rotted your internal organs. Luckily, you were found before your brain died.

1

jav0< Your surgery is almost complete. You may notice unusual enhancements in the performance of your circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems, as well as an apparent increase of your strength and movement speed.

Your limbs look strange to you because you are actually seeing their graphene-based muscular frame. With this skin cover, they will look normal and recover their tactile sensitivity.

ver0< You did not harvest my actual skin for those, right?

jav0< What? Oh, no, no, absolutely not.

The skin of your limbs was completely unusable.

I'm not sure how it works because that is not my field, but these were synthetized using stem cells of your body.

So I guess yes, in a way, we totally harvested your actual skin. Sorry.

1

jav0< These patches of skin have been slightly modified to withstand the greater tension of your new graphene muscles, along with extreme temperatures and moderate impacts.

You can remove them anytime you want, although I would suggest against it; they are quite difficult to put on and I imagine it would feel quite weird.

ver0< It already feels fucking weird!

It looks exactly like my old fur, spot patterns and all!

1

ver0< Oi! Watch where you put your hands!

jav0< Madam, your legs sort of come out of your pelvis, I have to work around that area to attach your skin.

We have been messing around with your internal organs for days, I assure you that touching you inappropriately couldn't be farther from my intentions right now.

ver0< Well, it's still really awkward. This whole situation is really creepy to me.

jav0< Naturally. Don't worry, I promise you will get used to your new body in no time.

1

ver0< Yeah, about that, I'm kind of curious.

What's with the crazy arms and legs? Did you lose them too or what?

jav0< Oh, no, not at all. These are just portable wrist computers, and thermal capacitors to help me move faster and avoid exhaustion.

Mostly for show, really.

1

jav0< These however are not.

ver0< Holy shit!

1

jav0< Several generations of my family lost their sight to corneal epithelium dystrophy. You'd be amazed how much less painful it is to replace your eyes with electronic devices than suffering frequent eye ulcers.

I also replaced my whole digestive apparatus with way more efficient bionic machinery. I ended up with a lot of spare space in my torso, which I use for storage. Would you like to see it?

ver0< NO!

No, thank you! I'm fine, really!
